How to Buy Furniture Online Without Regret

2026-10-25 · 6 min read · By RarDeals

Furniture is the hardest thing to buy online, because everything that matters — size, comfort, fabric, build quality — is exactly what a photo cannot show you. The good news: almost every furniture regret comes from skipping one of a handful of checks.

Measure everything, twice

Measure the room, then measure the path the furniture takes to get there: doorways, hallways, stairwells, and elevator doors. A sofa that fits your living room but not your front door is a very expensive problem. Compare the product's box dimensions, not just the assembled dimensions, because it arrives in a box.

Read dimensions, not photos

Product photos are styled with small rooms, wide lenses, and no people for scale. A "cloud sectional" can be a compact loveseat or a room-dominating sectional — the photos will look similar. The dimensions tell the truth: seat depth, seat height, overall width, and leg height (which decides whether your robot vacuum fits underneath).

Fabric matters more than color

If you have kids or pets, the fabric decision matters more than the shade. Removable, machine-washable covers are the single most practical feature for a family sofa — a spill on a fixed cover is a stain forever, while a washable cover is a laundry cycle. Check whether covers are actually removable and washable, not just "easy to clean," which often means "wipe with a damp cloth and hope."

Check the return policy before you fall in love

Returning furniture is not like returning a shirt. Some retailers charge return shipping for large items, some require you to repackage a 100-pound box, and some only offer store credit. Read the furniture return policy specifically — the general return policy often does not apply to oversized items. If the policy is bad, that is part of the price.

Assembly: what is actually included

"No assembly required" and "assembly required" are very different evenings. Check whether tools are included, how many people the instructions assume, and whether the retailer offers assembly service and what it costs. For modular sectionals, check whether the pieces connect securely or just slide apart on hard floors — a rug or furniture grippers fix the sliding, but you should know before delivery day.

Reviews: filter for the useful ones

Sort reviews by verified purchases and look for photos from real homes, not the listing photos. Pay special attention to reviews written months after purchase — that is when comfort, sagging, and fabric durability actually show up. A sofa with fifty 5-star reviews from delivery week and silence afterward is a different product than one people still love a year later.
